Game Changers - Using IPads to Teach Everyone Anything in An Inclusion Title I Classroom.

This presentation will use a workshop style to coach educators in how to incorporate iPads into all aspects of their classroom instruction. During the 2012-2013 school year the presenter used iPads on a daily basis in her 4th grade inner-city inclusion classroom. Students participating were ELL, autism spectrum disorder, gifted and talented, learning disabled, and from 7 different countries, yet the iPads were the great equalizer in the classroom. None of the students had any experience using touch screen technology in the classroom and all of them, even the most challenged, became adept at research, math, writing and reading on the iPads. Students used a variety of apps to achieve success across the curriculum while at the same time meeting common core standards. The children used the iPads:
• to build math skills from addition to solving multistep word problems
• to increase vocabulary
• to build fluency
• for reluctant readers to become excited, engaged readers
• to conduct research
• to participate in project based learning in science, social studies, literacy and math
• And for each student, regardless of challenges, to write and illustrate their own novel.
Educators who attend this workshop will be given an overview of the year-long integration and hands-on strategies in how to incorporate iPads into their classrooms. The iPads were bought through a grant the presenter wrote and the presenter was self-educated in how to use the iPads. So in other words – any willing educator can have the same success in his/her classroom! Appropriate apps, teaching strategies, and classroom grant writing hints will be presented and supporting materials will be distributed.

The idea of allowing elementary students to bring mobile devices to school can be intimidating. Finding meaningful ways to integrate myriad devices can be even more daunting. Careful planning and flexible thinking are key to any successful pilot or implementation. Attendees in this session will learn practical ways to integrate BYOD in elementary classrooms with a particular focus on safety, digital citizenship, logistics, cooperative learning, community building and maximizing resources. In this hands-on session, participants will explore how our 3rd and 5th grade science classes successfully integrated iPads into the curriculum to heighten student engagement, develop 21st century skills, replace traditional documenting and reporting of scientific exploration, and create a greener classroom. The presentation will give the participants the opportunity to: participate in a sample classroom experience, engage in a discussion about the student and teacher experience of the pilot project, learn about the behind the scenes technical aspects of implementing such a project, discuss the potential successes/pitfalls, and as explore a variety of applications that facilitate STEAM learning and assessment, digital note taking, collaboration, and cloud storage.

Through the use of iTunes U, learners can be empowered to educate others through innovative lessons. See how a course in iTunes U gained over 70,000 subscribers in less than 5 months and connected a high school science class in Texas to Nigeria, New Zealand, Chicago, and a nursing school in South America. 1:1 Mobile Tablet Project- Enhancing Teaching and Learning with iPads

This presentation will highlight a two year project on mobile tablets as a 1:1 device in five rural schools in Northern Alberta. It will include a brief overview of this project, as well as what was learned about the impact of introducing a class set of iPads in a Bretfort cart to the learning ecosystem of five rural inclusive classrooms. Hacking The Humanities: The iPad and Interdisciplinary Studies

When we look at technology integration on the classroom level, the big push appears to be towards using the iPad in S.T.E.M. studies. Participants in Hack The Humanities: The iPad and Interdisciplinary Studies will learn how the iPad can be used in the humanities. This session will demonstrate how iOS and other technologies put the Arts into S.T.E.A.M. Students in the humanities can use the iPad to go beyond studying art, literature, philosophy and music. Using the right apps, they learn to interact with classroom material. Examples of student-generated material will be shown along with lessons that are easily adaptable across the humanities curriculum. Throughout this presentation, participants will see how the iPad can transform assessment. With a little creativity, teachers will be able to move beyond the traditional essay or test to assess understanding. Innovation Spaces: A Shared iPad Cart Model

What if your district can’t afford 1:1 iPads? This presentation will provide an overview of the planning, and implementation process of how the Blue Valley School District developed and deployed a shared iPad cart model in five elementary schools.

During the 2011-12 school year, Education Services developed an innovation technology project that would create technology rich classrooms where teachers would demonstrate seamless technology integration into classroom instruction. The project was designed to provide students with instructional activities to increase engagement, application and personalize their learning.

During the presentation, participants will gain an understanding of the project, implementation specifications, view student work, and review the evaluation data collected during the initial phase of the project. Participants will also gain access to the district’s planning materials, App evaluation process, selection, and rubrics.

Using Social Media to Communicate Student Outcomes to Parents

Gaining parental support for new curriculum and instruction initiatives often problematic, but is particularly difficult in high-performing districts. In the 2012 - 2013 school year the Stratton teachers were facing the challenge of implementing Tools of the Mind (a new curriculum and instructional model for Kindergarten), the Commons Core State Standards, increasing their use of technology to support their learning goals, and piloting a new RTI model at the same time. In order to increase parental awareness and support for these initiatives the teachers at the Stratton Elementary School utilized social media - Twitter, YouTube, and blogs - to go beyond just communicating to parents the details of their initiatives, to providing regular vivid examples of what those initiatives look like in their students' classrooms by posting short weekly iMovies on YouTube. They spark parents interest in the videos by frequent Tweets throughout the week. To help foster parent-student communication about the student's learning they provide conversation starters to parents on a regular basis. This use of social media has also had an unexpected bi-product of providing a source of professional sharing among the teachers in the school. Teachers began getting ideas from their colleagues for pedagogical choices by following each other on Twitter and reading each other's blogs. By the end of the school year a short survey given to parents evidenced the strong support for these new initiatives and the new methods of communiation that the teachers had adopted.

Beyond the Flipped Classroom: Creating at Home Exploratory and Problem-Based Learning

Participants in this session will learn how to engage students in authentic at home learning using the ideas of the flipped classroom alongside exploratory and problem-based learning. Moving introduction to content outside the classroom frees up valuable class time for group-work, extension activities, and coaching – all of which push students to content mastery. When it comes to STEM subjects, however, the flipped classroom is a challenge. Students learn best through doing, and moving exploratory labs and investigations to “homework” is a delicate process. This session will explore how to leverage a variety of iPad applications, online programs, and content delivery systems in order to create digital at home exploratory and problem-based learning. By the end of this session, participants will learn how to modify a 5-E lesson plan to fit the flipped classroom teaching model, and will be exposed to a variety of ways to create online labs, investigations, and exploratory learning environments. While iPads will be used to create the digital learning environment, by the end of the session, participants will be able to deliver their online learning or through an iPad or Internet connected computer. The iPad: Technology, Personalized Learning, and Effective Classroom Instruction.

The Millis Middle School has implemented the iPad in a 1:1 setting in grade eight for the past four years in an ongoing journey to personalize learning for all students. Our teachers use Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as a framework when planning the delivery of instruction for students. Universal Design for Learning allows all students access to the curriculum. The iPad has proven to be invaluable for the delivery of this type of personalized instruction, which encourages all students to take ownership of their learning. Teachers use an online learning management system daily to ensure that the lesson is accessible to every student and transitions within the lesson are seamless.

The iPad has enabled our teachers to consistently deliver research-based models of instruction, including Blended Learning, UDL, Understanding by Design, and differentiation to meet the learning goals of each student. This also includes universal screenings, progress monitoring, and intervention strategies that are research based, timely, and effective. The iPad ensures that our instruction is personalized, content is represented in different ways, and ensures that student engagement is at a premium.

Participants will come away with an understanding of how the iPad can transform teaching and enhance learning in the classroom. Participants will see actual classroom tested lessons that utilize the ideas and strategies of effective instruction.

Participants will see how to merge these essential instructional methods for student success. Take photos with your iPad and immediately model the curves with an equation or a geometric figure – on your iPad! Obtain and “play” over 1000 FREE interactive classroom ready activities – including teacher notes and solutions for grades 6 – 12, many of these align with the Common Core State Standards. Each student is engaged and working at his/her own pace on such tough-to-teach-and-learn topics as: domain and range, sum of infinite geometric series, the unit circle, investigate slope interactively, area formulas, and many more. Participants will learn how to cleverly utilize these apps: Reflector, Splashtop, Dropbox, and TI-Nspire. All five of these – Graph, Calculate, Geometry, Spreadsheets, Data & Statistics – work together in concert with TI-Nspire. Reflector allows the user how to wirelessly project what is on the iPad screen to the class. Splashtop allows the user to use the iPad as a wireless mouse and control any program on the desktop computer remotely. Do you find that you never have enough time in the day to teach the information you need? Would you love for your students to study the core subject-matter throughout the entire day no matter what class they are attending? Using technology tools and core content Integration techniques, this can become a reality. During this session, best practices on subject integration across the curriculum will be shared and the Creative Content Integration method will be discussed. Using this method, teachers and curriculum planners will have the ability to help their students dive deeper into class material.

Creative Content Integration is the process of taking a subject-area theme or skill and incorporating it into all classes the child experiences throughout the day. Children are able to manipulate content in reading, math, art, music, physical education and other subject-areas. This process takes careful planning and support of enrichment teachers. The presenter will discuss her experience using the Creative Content Integration technique. Elementary grade level examples will be presented and discussed with participants. Example student work and planning templates will be shown as well. Like Project Based Learning, students can work to produce a single project which is supported and assessed in all content areas or students can work on separate projects in each area supported by a common theme.

Ready for some real cool tools to teach digital citizenship? In this double play session, try your hands on Common Sense Media’s new interactive eBooks for iPads and Digital Passport Mobile. Now in eBook format for iPad, the K-12 Digital Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum offers books for both teachers and students. The eBook Teacher Edition covers curriculum lessons, class activities, videos, and embedded professional development such as background on the curriculum topics, quizzes and reflections, and videos of lessons in action. The accompanying eBook Student Workbooks include interactive, drag and drop lesson activities, videos, lesson and unit-level assessments, and the ability for students to submit work from the book to the teacher. iPads and Projects and Apps, OH MY! Effectively Integrating iPads into Your Science Classroom

The focus of this session is to help you introduce and use iPads into your science classroom. We will offer suggestions for getting your classroom started to setting up labs, projects and activities, as well as talk about the infrastructure needed to get things going. Our goal is to help you learn how to navigate between using the iPad as a tool for consumption and as a tool of creation in your science classroom. Featured content topics will be genetics, forensic science, cellular processes, anatomy/physiology, dissection, and more. We will also discuss our plan from proposal to integration of ipads and the technical needs and challenges. Whether you have a 1:1 program, shared carts or class sets of iPads, our presentation applies to you. This is a great session for anyone starting out with iPads to those of us who have experience and are looking for more ideas!

Mirror, Mirror...Student Self-assessment and ePortfolios through the iPad Looking Glass

Tag it, you’re it! - create, capture, curate, and celebrate learning using iPads to demonstrate mastery. When iPads and Evernote entered the picture for one Vermont school committed to overhauling graduation requirements to measure whole-school proficiencies, something magical happened. Proficiency-based graduation requirements and portfolios transformed assessment from something done to students to the reality of engaged student ownership of learning.

Participants will see how all middle level teachers and students in our school are using Evernote and a suite of apps to encourage self reflection toward mastery, ongoing formative reflection, and transformed student-led conferences. Our motto: “always capturing, always collaborating, always reflecting.”

During the presentation, participants will create an Evernote notebook, capture their real-time learning, tag it, and share. Following this hands-on experience, they will see examples of student app use (Aurasma, iMovie, Explain Everything, etc.) to demonstrate learning and how this evidence gets captured and curated in their Graduate Expectations Evernote Notebook and shared with their parents and teachers in student-led conferences. Participants will come to understand that tagging is the key to a portfolio structured upon school-wide proficiencies (the answer to the question who is the fairest of them all?). We will then share how this process, adopted district-wide, leads to a transformed proficiency-based assessment scheme.

The presentation culminates with a frank assessment of our work and our next steps from the lens of a student’s perspective. After watching the short video 10 Expectations from LeavingtoLearn.org we will take a good hard look in the mirror and share our rating of our work with evidence for each of the 10 Expectations in our own Evernote notebook. Participants will leave with a shared Evernote notebook of resources to include how-to videos created by both teachers and students, our school’s Graduation Expectations & rubrics, and portfolio reflection organizers.

Redefining the Writing Process with iPads

Text-to-speech, speech-to-text, mind-mapping apps, multimedia, and collaborative documents, all available on iPad and other mobile devices, redefine the writing process. In this session, we will discuss their impact as well as how they can transform the ways in which we think about the development of new literacies across grade levels.

First, we will discuss the potential for these tools to meet a diverse set of learners, highlighting strategies to support students who may struggle with reading, output, organization, or editing. From there, we will explore the potential for collaborative writing and editing. Finally, we will look beyond traditional writing assignments and describe the potential for alternative assessments given the capabilities of mobile technology.

Participants will leave this presentation with a host of tools, ideas, and resources to support the writing process with mobile devices.

Come and explore the iBooks texts developed for high school social studies by Brown University’s Choices Program, learn why we chose this path and some of the advantages and pitfalls we’ve discovered, hear about research comparing the use of this new medium vs print, and learn how you can develop content for your classroom using this new development tool.
