The iPad and the New Zealand education system are both personal devices. The entire NZ education system is designed to recognise the individual’s skills in different settings and environments. The iPad is having a big impact in New Zealand education because the flexibility of the device is matched by that of the system. I will explain how the New Zealand system can offer such flexibility whilst still maintaining standards. In fact, our students are recognised by success in what we call “Standards,” which indicate a level of understanding or skill in a specific area. How one gives evidence of an understanding is also flexible. In New Zealand we recognise that students’ talents for expression take many forms but that all can prove a deep understanding. Students can study at their learning level rather than being fixed within their school grade and use the iPad as best fits them in their assessments.
